May I suggest 1 minor improvement to your formula? Therefore, I usually never hardcode row or column offsets into my formulas or VBA code. JP, Your solution gives the wrong answer if the date is outside a range, whereas Chandoo's returns a Zero to tell you something is wrong. However the mental gymnastics of arrays is beyond most Excel users, as are true array formulas.

Hopefully once everyone is awesome at Excel this won't be the case, but that won't be any time soon Where Sam, a student, wanted to be able to extrapolate between 2 numbers which were based on other criteria, resulting in both a horizontal and vertical offset of both the X and Y components. Well met, Hui. My solution requires that the dates be all-inclusive, i. One more option with Match. The arithmetic operation does this already.

There is also no need to adjust the row number with the -5 part. Instead just have the second term start in Row Notice that all three are 10 rows tall.

Doing it this way has the advantage that the formula WILL return a zero, not a -5, if it doesn't find a match. You can then change your formula on the sample spreadsheet that reports which row or none a value was matched to:. Regards, Daniel Ferry excelhero. Hi, i am using a data base with following details: Row. B2 to Z2 : date range say 1st to 25th Row no. Not sure how the two formulas got clipped but in my comment above, they should have been:. Hi Guys, This relates to a problem I am having.

I have been racking my brain for a while using different methods Don't even need sumproduct. Actually I'm telling lies Instead should use the ROW method proposed by Daniel. Good observation!

Couple of things. Forgot to mention that this requires you to add the numbers one through 10 down the right hand side of your table. Thank you for teaching valuable tricks Frillo: Welcome to Chandoo. You need not be ashamed. I am from a country that never even qualified for World Cup football. Dominik: Excellent suggestion. I tried to keep the formula short for this post as it lets more readers get it.

So I used a bit of hard coding. Thanks for the pointer to discussion on forums. Excellent stuff. Elias: Sorry, the commenting engine is crazy and often chops the lessthan and greater than symbols thinking they are HTML code. Good stuff btw Daniel: Good observations on the formula.

Hats off. All those indirects and addresses are purely a long-winded way of finding out if the value in C4 falls in any of the ranges. This is a really awesome stuff I can already think to integrate to my Gantt Datasheet Frillo and Chandoo : People in countries not qualified have more time to play with Excel. This is the reason why real excel heroes come from overseas. Great formula I was wondering how to include a calculation in this formula.

For example, I'm calculating the miles I drive for business trips to the monthly mileage rate allowed by the company. Because the mileage rate changes monthly, I've created a table for each month and the associated mileage rate:.

In another table I record my mileage and the actual Date of the business trip. In this table I will have a row for each trip and I will have many rows per month. I included the following formula from your example and it does provide the "Row Number from the above monthly table.

What I would like it to do is to use your formula to find the month which it does and instead of giving me the row number, I would like to insert a calculation to multiply the Mileage rate for that specific month times the actual mileage I recorded. Has anyone tried doing this with a set of data in columns instead of rows? Then along the top row of the gantt are the months of the year. I should also mention that I have a range of dates--e.

Jesse Can you post your data somewhere together with a description or example of what you want to achieve. I've posted the URL for the spreadsheet--hopefully it came through ok? The Gantt should have several projects approx.

So, for the first one--I'm trying to get the Gantt cells to turn a color starting March and go through July to reflect the time of the program. This data for the Gantt is all pulled from the Raw Data sheet. I can email you the file directly if it doesn't come through. I know I'm a bit late to this discussion, but I'm hoping someone can help me with a variation on the range theme. Rather than returning the row that the lookup value is in I'd like to be able to return a value that relates to each range.

I want the price to populate when the number of users is entered. Two further question on this which I'm struggling with. I can normally figure these things out but am blocking on this one. I want to get the data at the intersection of a row and a column based on a number falling within a given range. In other words, the information provided is a great start. However, I want to do two additional things. I want the row array in the formula to be dynamic.

My table position may change so the row number may change. How do I circumvent this in the formula? I want to return both the row number as well as a column number to the right of the data above.

Using the example data, suppose I have data in column E. How do I get the data from the intersection of the row using the range match and a specified column? Wow, this is all really great learning. It solves somewhat of my problem but I don't think the whole thing. I am trying to get a formula to determine a year ago from the last date entered into my worksheet. Then, I have a column next to those dates with numbers. Once I have the correct dates for the past year, I then need to add the numbers in the next column to figure out the time the employee used within the past year.

Please help! This will basically lookup the next highest value that is less than the lookup value in the first column and return the corresponding column 3 data. I want to find the total numbers between two numbers. I have a similar problem, for which I haven't yet found a solution.

However, if a number such as is the target, I need it to find the value associated with , namely 3. Notice that there isn't a row starting with Any ideas? What if the date range table had a third column of labels? You must create flow charts and Gantt charts manually in all three apps. Excel has a recommended charts feature, which changes based on the data you select.

Excel offers combination charts, which combines two chart types into one. Sharing Documents Excel, Excel Online, Office , and Sheets allow multiple users to share documents, but each app handles sharing differently. Because the apps store documents on the cloud, sharing is built into Sheets and Excel Online. Collaboration In real-time collaboration, multiple users interact with the same document at the same time.

Excel Online users, Office subscribers with the latest version of Excel, and iOS and Android app users can host co-authoring sessions, but under a number of conditions: Office subscribers, Excel Online users, and users of the iOS or Android apps can be co-authors.

Users of the standalone Excel app can be co-authors as long as they have Excel or higher. Depending on what version and platform each person is using, the host may not be able to see what others are doing in real time, though their changes will appear.

Because of the variances in available functions, features, and charts between versions, users may not be able to properly view all documents on which they are collaborating. Sheets and Excel Online have built-in chat windows that users can access during collaboration.

Keyboard Shortcuts Keyboard shortcuts are convenient for both advanced users and people with basic spreadsheet needs. Formulas and Functions Formulas are one of the most valuable features of any spreadsheet tool.

Cost Each app has a couple of options for cost. Yes Yes Yes Excel has stronger automation abilities. Does it support defined ranges? No Yes No It can be included in Sheets via an add-on. Does it support duplicate removal? Does it support autofill? Yes Yes Yes Excel has more advanced filtering options. Data updating with other suite apps? Yes Yes, but only if the two documents are on the same drive. Yes Data pasted into a slide show or Word processing document updates when the data is changed in the spreadsheet.

Beyond habit or the labor of switching, here are other reasons users often stick with Excel: Excel has more features. Excel is more widely adopted, so the help and support network is better and knowledge bases are more extensive. At launch, Sheets was far behind Excel, and some users have never revisited the app to view the updates.

Sheets lacks some features that are important to the user, and add-ons are hard to find. Excel can calculate faster with larger and more complicated files than other applications. Excel is used by larger companies, so employees have to work with it.

Older Excel documents e. When opening an Excel document in Sheets, only simple formatting is allowed. When importing documents into Sheets, there's no error troubleshooting like there is in Excel. Here's the simple explanation: The VLOOKUP function searches for a specific value in your data, and once it identifies that value, it can find -- and display -- some other piece of information that's associated with that value.

When you look up your data, it must be listed vertically wherever that data is located. When conducting a VLOOKUP in Excel, you're essentially looking for new data in a different spreadsheet that is associated with old data in your current one. For instance, if one spreadsheet has a vertical list of names, and another spreadsheet has an unorganized list of those names and their email addresses , you can use VLOOKUP to retrieve those email addresses in the order you have them in your first spreadsheet.

Those email addresses must be listed in the column to the right of the names in the second spreadsheet, or Excel won't be able to find them. Go figure A unique identifier is a piece of information that both of your data sources share, and -- as its name implies -- it is unique i.

Unique identifiers include product codes, stock-keeping units SKUs , and customer contacts. In the video below, we'll show an example in action, using the VLOOKUP function to match email addresses from a second data source to their corresponding data in a separate sheet. Author's note: There are many different versions of Excel, so what you see in the video above might not always match up exactly with what you'll see in your version.

That's why we encourage you to follow along with the written instructions below. In the steps below, we'll assign the right value to each of these components, using customer names as our unique identifier to find the MRR of each customer.

Remember, you're looking to retrieve data from another sheet and deposit it into this one. With that in mind, label a column next to the cells you want more information on with a proper title in the top cell, such as "MRR," for monthly recurring revenue.

This new column is where the data you're fetching will go. To the left of the text bar above your spreadsheet, you'll see a small function icon that looks like a script: Fx. Click on the first empty cell beneath your column title and then click this function icon. The part numbers start in cell B3, and if I scroll down, you can see the status values end at cell E Next, I'll type the number 3.

So what just happened? Now look through this range of cells, and in the third column to the right, find the value on the same row. Table of contents. Next: Advanced IF functions. Excel training. This can be an actual value, or a blank cell that will hold a value: H2, Enter your table array or lookup table, the range of data you want to search, and a comma: H2,B3:F25, Enter column index number. I'll enter H2 as the first argument, because that is where I'll type the part numbers.

So, I'll enter B3, a colon, and E52, then I'll type another comma. And you need to do that because the functions won't work without the colons and commas. In other words, it's the third column over from the part numbers, the data I know. Free tutorials excel vlookup tutorial - PDF. Size : Excel Advanced Excel Tools. Excel - Advanced Excel Tools. A box titled Formula Builder or Insert Function will appear to the right of your screen depending on which version of Excel you have.

You can also enter this formula into a call manually by entering the bold text above exactly into your desired cell. These criteria will help Excel narrow down exactly where the data you want is located and what to look for. The first criteria is your lookup value -- this is the value of your spreadsheet that has data associated with it, which you want Excel to find and return for you. To enter it, click on the cell that carries a value you're trying to find a match for. In our example, shown above, it's in cell A2.

You'll start migrating your new data into D2, since this cell represents the MRR of the customer name listed in A2. Keep in mind your lookup value can be anything: text, numbers, website links, you name it. As long as the value you're looking up matches the value in the referring spreadsheet -- which we'll talk about that in the next step -- this function will return the data you want.

Next to the "table array" field, enter the range of cells you'd like to search and the sheet where these cells are located, using the format shown in the screenshot above. The entry above means the data we're looking for is in a spreadsheet titled "Pages" and can be found anywhere between column B and column K. The sheet where your data is located must be within your current Excel file.

This means your data can either be in a different table of cells somewhere in your current spreadsheet, or in a different spreadsheet linked at the bottom of your workbook, as shown below. Excel Quick Start.
